Wireless network provider Airspan Networks has entered into an agreement to acquire Corning Incorporated's wireless business, including 6,000 and 6,200 distributed antenna systems (DAS) and small cell RAN products.
Combining Corning’s non-macro infrastructure portfolio with Airspan’s existing small cell and private network will make Airspan the leading supplier in the 5G wireless network market.
A mobility report published by Ericsson reported that in the US, around 80% of data is consumed indoors. This high data usage indoors is fueling demand for better indoor 5G infrastructure to cater to demand.
Airspan expects that mobile operators, venue owners and enterprises will continue to increase their investments in providing high quality indoor coverage.
With Corning’s network of infrastructure comes another network of relationships with mobile operators, public venues and enterprise customers built over the past 15 years, positioning them in a strong position to leverage this growth market.
Towercos have been increasing their investments into inbuilding connectivity, particularly in the US and Europe where 4G densification and 5G is maturing. World leading network infrastructure player Bolyn Networks recently entered Germany, another leading private network and small cell markets, acquiring a local private network specialist.
In the UK, Digital Bridge-backed towerco Freshwave recently raised the alarm around inbuilding limitations. The deal is expected to close during Q1 of 2025, with Airspan planning to trade more than US$250 million in funded debt for equity and raise up to US$95 million in new equity financing.
Glenn Laxdal, President and CEO of Airspan commented “This acquisition is a strategic step for Airspan, reinforcing our leadership in in-building connectivity and expanding our ability to serve enterprises and mobile network operators.”
“As we integrate this business, our focus is on delivering a smooth transition for our customers while unlocking new opportunities for innovation.”
