EdgePoint Towers Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of EdgePoint Infrastructure, has launched its first solar hybrid site in Malaysia, marking the towerco's first power-as-a-service site outside The Philippines and supporting the company’s broader goal of reducing carbon emissions and integrating renewable energy into telecom operations.
The new installation, with a 5.9-kilowatt peak (kWp) solar capacity and battery storage, is capable of providing up to 100% of the energy required to run telecom equipment at the site, significantly reducing the need for diesel-generated power. According to the towerco, this hybrid system allows the site to function autonomously, supporting network infrastructure in areas where conventional power sources may be less viable.
EdgePoint’s CEO in Malaysia, Muniff Kamaruddin, described the project as part of a long-term sustainability strategy aimed at lowering operational costs and emissions.
“This initiative is particularly suited for remote and high-transit locations such as highways, tunnels, and transport terminals, where reliable mobile coverage is essential,” he said. The company estimates that the deployment will cut the site’s annual carbon emissions by roughly 78%.
The project also reflects growing interest in solar integration within Malaysia’s tower sector. With high solar insolation due to its location, Malaysia is well-positioned to adopt solar energy solutions. Kamaruddin noted that solar hybrid sites align with both environmental and commercial goals, offering a practical approach to improving energy efficiency in network infrastructure.
EdgePoint intends to scale its renewable energy program, with additional solar or solar hybrid sites scheduled for rollout by the end of 2025. The company says it aims to support both MNOs and other telecom clients in meeting their sustainability targets without compromising network quality.
EdgePoint Infrastructure currently operates a portfolio of approximately 15,800 sites across Southeast Asia, including 1,800 in Malaysia. That makes it the second-largest tower operator in the country and one of the fastest-growing independent towercos in the region.
