How the model has taken hold in the African telecoms sector

There are currently eight ESCO contracts signed in the African telecom sector, placing 5,580 towers under ESCO management in seven different countries. This figure is expected to increase exponentially in the next few years. TowerXchange examine the current status of the emerging telecom ESCO market in Africa.

One of the defining characteristics of the past 12 months in the sub-Saharan African tower market has been the emergence of ESCOs. At the start of 2017, discussions very much centred around whether the ESCO model had a place in the sector, by Q3 2018 seven ESCO contracts have been signed on the continent with a healthy pipeline of contracts expected to be announced in the next six months.
